Tusker Triathlon Du Paradis

The Vanuatu Triathlon Association, VTA, is preparing for its premier event of the year in Port Vila which is known as the TUSKER Triathlon du Paradis.

The 2006 event has been scheduled to take place on Sunday 24th September. Organisers says this year’s program comes a week later than usual because of high tide, but that the usual weekend of activities will take place as usual.

The information published on the VTA website http://www.triathlon.com.vu/index.html  reads;-

“One of the most satisfying aspects of our triathlon is that it attracts people of all ages and abilities, and regularly attracts  competitors from New Caledonia, New Zealand and Australia who enjoy a week or two's holiday in the tropics. This year we had nine from New Caledonia and six from Australia and a total of 71 competitors.

“The Triathlon du Paradis has special meaning to members of the Vanuatu Triathlon Association as it is our annual championships.

The full course presents a real challenge to competitors. This year's event is the modified course  we have trialled which comprises a swim in the harbour of 1500 metres, followed by four laps of the cycle course from the Anchor Inn around town, along the Fr Walter Lini Hwy  to near the airport and back, to give a distance of 40 km.

This work out has a couple of small hills but is mainly flat. This is followed by four 2.5km laps of the running course, which takes athletes from the Anchor through town to ASCO Motors and back, including the testing hill up to ASCO, a distance of 10 km.

“For those who don't feel like doing the full event, there is also a half course and a short course which is a quarter distance”.

Meanwhile VTA is encouraging more local and especially ni-Vanuatu participation, and the Vanuatu Post has come forward to give a little push by offering to sponsor the entry fee for all ni-Vanuatu entries.
