MASI programme for PINA 2007
looking good
A series of workshops will open a busy week of PINA convention activities
in the Solomon Islands in May. The biennial convention is scheduled to
begin with workshops Monday 21 May to Wednesday 23 May, according to a
Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) organising committee draft
programme.
The workshops are tentatively scheduled to include areas such as economic and health reporting, visual language, management, and a revival of the PINA Pacwomen network.
The main convention is due to open 10.30am Thursday 24 May at the Honiara Hotel. The keynote address is on Media Rebuilding Pacific Economies.
It sets the tone for the strong emphasis there will be on the role the region's news media can play helping expose corruption and mismanagement and helping build good governance and better economies.
The opening and keynote address will be followed after lunch by two major plenary sessions. The first is Economies, Media and Governance Issues: Lessons from the Solomon Islands. The second is Pacific Economies and Media Systems. That night there is a welcome reception and dinner.
Friday 25 May features a busy full day of plenary sessions and workshops, before all participants are invited to join the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Solomon Star.
The Solomon Star is now the successful daily newspaper of the Solomon Islands. It was launched in May 1982 as an A4 size weekly. Its founder and publisher, John Lamani, is the president of MASI and chairs MASI's organising committee for the Honiara PINA convention. His wife Catherine runs their radio station PAOA FM and chairs the convention's fundraising committee.
Saturday 26 May features the all-day PINA retreat at an island resort. This features industry group meetings, including TV, and workshops in the morning and the PINA biennial general meeting in the afternoon.
Saturday evening back in Honiara is the PINA closing dinner and awards ceremony.
